Each One Reach One

Adult Classes

 

One of the last things Jesus taught His apostles was that they were to make disciples of others by teaching them all that Christ had commanded the apostles to do (Mt. 28:19-20). Therefore, at FGBC, we offer classes during the week that help fulfill that mission.

Coming in Fall 2010: 

Beginning September 1, 2010, Disciple Making Institute, or DMI classes, will meet on Wednesday at 6:30 pm. In some courses, a certificate of completion* will be offered for those who desire an advanced educational experience, and who are willing to be held accountable for doing assignments connected with the course. (Also listed at the end are special adult non-DMI courses.) The courses offered this Fall are:

Course #1: The Doctrine of God (Pastor Travis) Open to anyone--meets in the Sanctuary.

Week 1 (09/01/2010):  The Existence of God-- How do we know that God exists?
     
Week 2 (09/08/2010):  The Knowability of God--Can we really know God? How much of God can we know?
 
Week 3 (09/15/2010):  The Character of God: “Incommunicable” and "Communicable" Attributes--How is God different from us?/How is God like us in his being and in mental and moral attributes?
    
Week 4 (09/22/2010):  God in Three Persons: The Trinity-- How can God be three persons, yet one God?
     
Week 5 (09/29/2010):  Creation--Why, how, and when did God create the universe?
    
Week 6 (10/06/2010):  God’s Providence--If God controls all things, how can our actions have real meaning? What are the decrees of God?
 
10/13/2010: Business Meeting
 
Week 7 (10/20/2010):  Miracles--What are miracles? Can they happen today?
   
Week 8 (10/27/2010):  Prayer--Why does God want us to pray? How can we pray effectively?
     
Week 9 (11/03/2010):  Angels--What are angels? Why did God create them?
     
Week 10 (11/10/2010): Satan and Demons--How should Christians think of Satan and demons today? Spiritual warfare?
 
The primary text of reference for the topics to be discussed in this class is:

Course #2: *Romans 1-11 (Ray Doerksen). A Certificate Course--meets in the Choir Room. See syllabus below:

Description

           This course is a study of the major themes of Romans 1-11 from a non-Reformed perspective. It is not a verse-by-verse study.  The only textbook required is the Bible. As a certificate course, weekly readings and assignments will be required for successful completion of the course (see details below). Auditors need not, but are encouraged to, complete the assignments for the purpose of maximizing learning.

Requirements for Certification
      No more than two absences
      Completion of reading assignments
      Completion of research assignments
      Submission of personal study questions (as requested)
      Memory work: Any 10 verses from: 1:16-17; 3:20-24; 5:1-10; 8:1-4; 10:1-4; 11:25, 28-32

      Successful completion of a final exam.

Week 1 (Sept. 1) - Introduction to the Course

  Assignment for Week Two

  • Read Romans 1-16, paying special attention to chapters 9-11.
  • Read Exodus 32:1-34:10. (Please note that I gave the wrong reference in class; this is the correct reference)
  • Come prepared to discuss: What do you believe that Paul is teaching in Romans 9-11?  What titles would you give to the three chapters?

Week 2 (Sept. 8) - The climax of Romans—chapters 9-11

Week 3 (Sept. 15) - The climax of Romans—study of chapter 9

Week 4 (Sept. 22) - Jews and Gentiles in Rome

Week 5 (Sept. 29) - The Thesis of Romans—Romans 1:16-17

Week 6 (Oct. 6) - The History of Sin—How does Paul describe the human moral condition?

Business Meeting (Oct. 13) - No class

Week 7 (Oct. 20) - The History of Salvation: Past—Original sin and justification

Week 8 (Oct. 27) - The History of Salvation: Past—The role of the law

Week 9 (Nov. 3) - The History of Salvation—Is salvation for everyone or not?

Week 10 (Nov. 10) - The History of Salvation—After we are saved, then what?

Final Exam.
